John Brandt has been an avid bicyclist since first riding the length of the C&O Canal in the early 70’s. He quickly grasped the versatility of modern mountain bikes, both for their off-road use and for their use as loaded commuter vehicles and is a strong proponent of the bicycle as a vehicle, in the roadway, acting and expecting to be treated as a driver of a vehicle. He brought his love of cycling into his workplace and was responsible for the creation of the first modern police bicycle patrol program in Maryland. He became a Police and EMS Cyclist Instructor with the International Police Mountain Bike Association and served as the Safety Advisor for the College Park Area Bike Coalition. He has written numerous articles on aspects of biking safety and helped to edit the current edition of “The Complete Guide to Public Safety Cycling.” John is an enthusiastic cyclist and can often be seen out on his tandem with his wife.
