Headphones while riding

Remember, it is illegal to wear headphones while riding a bicycle.  Listening to music while riding a bike obstructs the rider’s awareness of his/her environment on the rode.  Awareness is key for safe cycling.  It is dangerous to riders, drivers, and pedestrians when there is cyclist listening to headphones.

Campus police have been more aware of cyclists’ presence on campus recently, and they will ticket for this.

Can you cite which law? Is it from the state or PG county? Know if it is illegal in DC?

    Here you go:

A person may not ride a bicycle, motor scooter, or EPAMD while wearing a headset or earplugs that cover both ears. (TR § 21-12010)

Basically, while cars have side and rear-view mirrors, a cyclist’s best tools for detecting approaching cars are his/her ears. The little helmet mirrors have a very limited view range. Consider your ears your early warning system for any time you need to change lanes, avoid a pothole, or make a left turn.

My brother is now a quadriplegic due to a bicycle accident. The accident would not have happened if he had not been wearing headphones. Sometimes these laws are really for your own safety.
